Author Topic: NeXT-versus...God: The CMW show that beat Saturday night's blizzard!!!  (Read 2978 times)

For Canadian bands, getting booked to play an NeXT showcase at CMW or NXNE is kinda like flying First Class on an airline.
Without even applying for the festival, let alone paying the application fee, you not only get free festival passes -- you also get paid to open for great bands like Soundtrack Of Our Lives, Wolf Parade, King Khan and His Shrines, The Zoobombs, Besnard Lakes, and...\
...add the following names to that list:
THE SUPERSTITIONS, THE UNIONIST MINISTERS, BLACK HAT BRIGADE, RADIUS & HELENA, PUT THE RIFLE DOWN, THE DISRAELIS, OBVIOUSLY 5 BELIEVERS.
On a night when the rest of the city seemed to be buried by a biblically-sized snowstorm, those bands somehow drew more than 250 people to The Silver Dollar and performed brilliantly.
They were bigger than the storm.

The Unionist Ministers are a terrific band and so are Sweet Homewreckers, also from Peterborough, which is Action Makes hometown.
Ultimately, my loyalty goes to true talent and strong character, wherever it comes from.
Now, gotta get moving. So much to do...

Whoa, what happened?  I thought this was an Anti-CMW showcase.  It's now listed as being part of CMW.

Whoa, what happened?  I thought this was an Anti-CMW showcase.  It's now listed as being part of CMW.

They outlawed the anti-show, Payroll! Wouldn't let me do it at the Dollar if it was presented that way. As for The Comfort Zone: during NXNE last year, the club lhad the temporary liquor license for the second show in the venue (downstairs from the Silver Dollar) revoked. It was the third time that happened to me (once with The Gris Gris) when doing shows in the Zone and, y'know, fuck that. I've been ripped to shreds financially too often doing the fucking things.
However, I did choose the entire line-up for the CMW show and we control the door so the bands are getting paid.
We gained some ground with those anti-shows. Accomplished something. It wasn't easy.

Poor Ace. I never liked Kiss but I kinda feel sorry fcor him.
But SO WHAT!!!!!
The fucking MARK INSIDE just got back from London, England, where they recorded 13-songs with producer with Jim Abbiss (the genius who did The Arctic Monkeys' hugely succesful album) and last Wednesday played to a sell-out crowd at Barfly in Camden.
     The Mark Inside did.
Just ask Liam Howe of the Sneaker Pimps or Sergio Pizzorno of Kasabian. They were there. Loved the show and hung out with The Mark Inside after.
The Mark Inside are fucking GREAT!

The bands were ALL selected by me.  Few of them, if any, applied to play the festival. They will receive door money on Saturday. It's a great situation, though not as great as the NeXT-at-NXNE shows I do (NXNE backs me financially on booking touring acts).
All this was achieved because I ran shows AGAINST both festivals. It wasn't easy, but the mission was accomplished.
And NeXT bands also get CMW festival passes.
Here's the festival info on when and where to get them:
Festival Registration for Showcasing Artists is being held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, located at 100 Front St. W (across from Union Station). Assigned Performer Passes can be picked on the Main Mezzanine in the Saskatchewan Room.
Band Registration will be held during these times;
Wednesday, March 5 - 9:00am - 7:00pm
Thursday, March 6 - 9:00am - 7:00pm
Friday, March 7 - 9:00am - 7:00pm
Saturday, March 8 - 9:00am - 6:00pm

And those were only the rough studio mixes (which is pretty awesome).
The album is being properly mixed in London right now.

great time.

all the bands rocked. dan had probably the best lineup of the night.

although some took waaay toooo long to set up/take down.
kinda acting like the headliners and forcing a couple bands to play ridiculously short sets.

but thats rocknroll.

It was a great show: a blizzard-proof line-up!!! And I'll do whatever I can to assist any of those bands in the future. There were no ego problems, no shortages of effort or enthusiasm anywhere in the line-up, from start to finish.
