Author Topic: POP MTL: Clues, Elfin Saddle, Horse Feathers, Casey Dienel -- SUNDAY  (Read 2527 times)

Okay so you jaded hooligans have more than enough on your plate so why the fuck should you pay attention to a show on Sunday with bands whose names are not very familiar.

Because on Sunday night, in a small chapel, Said the Gramophone presents a slate of four acts that'll grow forests in your chest.

CLUES are the new project by Bethany Or (Liederwolfe, Shanghai Triad), Alden Penner (The Unicorns, alden & adam) and Brendan Reed (les angles morts, think about life, letlowns). They play drums and guitar and keys and hollers, and make sounds like songs and flowers and thunderstorms, like heartcrash and end-of-world.

ELFIN SADDLE have been casting spells all summer long, collecting fans, playing their fertile, fucked folk-songs with broken accordion, scattershot percussion, ukelele and guitar and duetting voices. Jordan and Emi are very rad.

HORSE FEATHERS ok just listen to this: "Walking and Running". they're from portland.

CASEY DIENEL is a bluebird singer with shades of malkmus, spektor, valleys, sundays. she covers "cut your hair" and sings las in a way that'll make yr mouth fall open. really she's something.

these four acts will be playing at the BIRKS CHAPEL, an amazing, intimate church space on University Avenue, above Milton.

so:
Sunday, October 7th
Casey Dienel / Elfin Saddle / Horse Feathers / Clues
(in that order)
Birks Chapel - 3520 University
Doors at 7:30 (please be on time.)
$12

that show was a great way to end pop.

i`m not sure i understand what even happened though. it was all very confusing during clues, but hilarious also.

the man got overheated, okay?!

this show was a rollercoaster (plus i had emotions about personal stuff and had to blink back tears a bit during casey's last song and a couple of other times) but my night wound up being kind of magical and i will always remember this show very, very fondly.

biking back home in the pouring rain was slightly less wonderful!

I concur.
I also felt the damp presence of tears on my cheeks several times during this show...and the pews were so comfy for sitting down after sore show standing feet.

Before I went, I'd debated whether I wanted to try to get into The National or just go to this and relax.  I chose this, and it was definitely the right decision...the first three bands were beautiful, and when Clues were actually able to get it together to play a song, it was incredible.

especially when he threw the drums into the mic stand and pissed off Dan the Soundman.    that guy gets pissed off every year, and it makes me warm at heart to know someone else is pissing him off like we did.

i hate to be the resident pf scroller but, don't you just fucking hate how mainstream music sources just pick up on whatever is flashy and going to grab people's attention. there is not one mentioning of what type of music or what it sounds like in this article, just unadulterated hype:

wow, that interview is funny... and weird... i didn't think the whole thing needed elaboration. was anyone demanding answers? how did a zine in nyc already hear about this? it kind of exploits something that i dunno, i didn't really feel needed exploration.

that's because they hadn't heard clues yet. the show wouldn't happen for a while.

i wish i could explain why but i think it was all best left to legend.
it's something like 'gilding the lily' though not quite so romantic. overkill? desecration? something that makes me feel weird about someone's guts being explored like that.
'cause not every joe in the world will appreciate those guts.
maybe i'm just being needlessly protective.
