Author Topic: Shooting in the Annex!  (Read 2679 times)

I guess nowhere is safe downtown.
I was on my way back home from seeing Joan of Arc at Lee's Palace
when I ran into the aftermath of a shooting.
Some guy who lived nearby said he heard 6 shots and two people were wounded.

This shit is depressing. I just moved to Walmer 2 months ago.
But more importantly, I hope the victims and witnesses are okay.

What's happening to Toronto?

I've only lived here for 8 years, but is this amount of shooting common for downtown?

That article was a bit confusing, especially when it said that in 2007 Toronto had the most homocides since 1992.
It's interesting how that article pops up directly after a shooting in the Annex.
Maybe crime had gone down in the past year, but in the past month or so it seems to be going up
and maybe that wasn't taken into account when composing all those statistics?

i think the summer heat makes people edgy and more prone to pulling out the firearms they shouldnt be carrying in the first place.

was the person who died white? if so, it's a news item, if not, it's 'gang violence'.

as for the article, the use of 'hipster' is ama-zing!

My poor roommate Amy was really distraught by the whole thing, she saw the dead guy and all that. Just the night before we had a major shitcapade outside our own house.

This hood is ridiculous. There's bomb threats and cops on every corner half the time. It's such a boring fucking neighborhood people actually do crazy bullshit like go to school, watch TV in bars and carry around firearms to spice things up a bit.

I can't believe anybody brought up safety issues when I moved to Parkdale last year. No way Bathurst/Bloor is less crazy than Dundas/Ossington.

I've been in the city now for about 7 years and I have to say that I'm genuinely freak out with the shootings in my area(s) lately.  College and Bathurst?  The Annex?   It always seemed like the shootings were more on the outskirts of the city.  Guns can go fuck themselves.

SOMEBODY GOT SHOT DOWNTOWN?? HOW CAN THIS BE?!?!

I've lived here for 15 years, in pretty much every area of downtown. None of this surprises me anymore. Get used to it.

Unless it's completely random, what's the big deal? I mean, as far as fearing for your own safety goes. The likelihood of being shot has a whole lot more to do with who you are/are with than where you are, no? This stuff can happen anywhere. A lot of people are assholes and dumb as fuck. Shitty, but I don't know... meh.

"Hordes of Annex hipsters watched in disbelief" is amazing, though.

I've been shot at twice in the years i've lived here. I'm numb to a lot of things, I suppose.
It's still a great city, with everything to offer, and I am thankful that I get to live here.
Stating "I guess nowhere is safe downtown" is a touch fatalist, don't you think?

I think people have to get used to hearing about people getting shot, but, dude, getting shot at is crazy and FAR from the norm. This thread links so closely to the "perception of being safe" post in the scariest street downtown thread, but I don't have time to make the connections. I think people should try to maintain a realistic view of the city (and "city life" in general). For me, I think that falls somewhere between Bob and Littleproud on this thread  icon_wink
