Why? i don't think their last album is as strong as some of their previous work, and there were discs that didn't make the shortlist that were stronger, i think. |

well, I guess I'll be the first to say it. 1/2 of those bands sound essentially the same and then there are a couple of obvious non-indie pop choices. Same as the last two years essentially. Doesn't make those bands bad, but does make the whole event a bit of a yawner... For what it's worth, CC doesn't sound like any of those bands...

i dunno buddy , i think it's fucking LAME as hell to use someone else's work to make $$$$$$ off of.
cc used trevor brown's art as merch (and you know they sold tons of those shirts )without crediting him or asking his consent.
then they basically laughed in his face when he asked for compensation.
the guy is a living , working artist and they are basically stealing his livelihood.
same with their "samples" , they don't credit the artist they sampled , nor did they negotiate usage.
there ARE legal and ethical ways to clear using samples or artwork , and in the case of a band with a half million handlers , there is no excuse not to do things in the proper way.
they don't even give a shit who they rip off cause they know they have the bigger/better lawyers.
and that stars cover is FUGLY.

The "legal" ways to utilize/negotiate samples are constructed for entirely UNethical reasons as far as I'm concerned. Sampling is a non-starter, it should be legal and its legal status is only confusing because of a string of poor legal decisions that can ONLY be explained as 1) racism and 2) big money record label power attorney pressure. The story about CC's use of Brown's work is convoluted (as you probably know). They were unwise to use it, but I don't think they were necessarily unethical. Unless you think 95% of the posters created for indie shows in the city are also "unethical". Don't get me wrong, I can see why Brown is pissed and their appropriation was probably a weak re-contextualization, but I'm 100% for utilization of prior works. The "licensing" system is a way to ensure the funneling of art production/copyright ownership (and any profit from their exploitation) into the hands of rich companies who employ expensive lawyers.
But, that's beside the point, really. Like I say, I'm not really a fan, but CC doesn't sound like most of those bands and they are MASSIVE. Backlash is fair enough... it happens to everybody, no?
OK, I have to confess, I think the completely unaltered use of Brown's drawing was lame if they actually did treat him badly (treating anyone like a chump is lame), but the sampling isn't (and nobody should have to credit or negotiate samples).

haha, fair enough. I still think the line between making money from promotion and making it from merch is a fine one. The anti-sampling regime is indefensible (though I think there should be some minimal practical limits). Being a dick is lame, I can give you that one (not based on personal experience...  )  |
