It gets foamy when you put the ice cream in first. I like it messy and overflowing, just tilt the glass when you pour. otherwise the hot ticket is to pour the rootbeer in very slowly, then gently place the ice cream on top so you get a slight separation of flavors. root beer floats are very precise and delicate operations.

I can't believe I forgot about HIRES.... does it still exist?  That was almost as good as A&W.  Remember how A&W was almost impossible to find in Ontario for years.  When I moved to Quebec I thought it was heaven, until I couldn't find crispix or R&R whiskey (which was probably awful anyway).
